"Hallowmas" - Scare people and get presents

I had an extremely busy weekend full of decoration making, trying on my wedding dress, and the "Santaland Diaries." I can't show a picture of the dress or certain people might see it. Sorry, you'll just have to wait!

I also got to do something that I've been wanting to do for a long time...I got to bake!!! Yay!!

I made these:
They are orange scones with a glaze. They were pretty yummy. I might have to make some more tomorrow.

I got the recipe from here but I altered it slightly:
http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/Simple-Scones/Detail.aspx
Baking makes me happy :)

Here's a picture of my adorable nephew Malachi in a hat that I knitted for him:

He a cutie pie and I love those chubby cheeks! But the hat is getting too small. I'll have to make him another one.

So Jess and I decided to put up our Christmas tree, but as stated in a previous entry, we are sort of making our own holiday this year. We are extremely broke right now (especially due to our upcoming wedding and a tardy Excel bill that hadn't come for five or six months and we called three times trying to get them to send us a bill) and we are also extremely sick and tired of Christmas starting in October instead of December like it's supposed to. Not to mention all the Christmas songs that we are forced to listen to for three months straight and the horrible commercials. Since when do people buy eachother cars for Christmas?!? Well, except for rich people.

Here's our first Hallowmas present:

All this commercialism has gotten way out of hand. I personally don't know anyone who has gotten a brand new car or computer from Santa. Seeing all those commercials just makes us feel bad because we really can't get much for our loved ones this year.

But that isn't supposed to be the point of Christmas, right? It isn't supposed to be so much about the presents, it's supposed to be about spending time with the ones you love. And your family (ha! Sorry, that was just a joke). And if you are of the religious persuasion (which we are not), apparently Jesus is the reason for the season, not a brand new Blu-Ray disc player. It really annoys me.

And one other thing which I am pretty sure isn't just me, I am so sick of red and green and the traditional symbols of Christmas: Santa, Rudolph, Bells, Holly, etc. I know I am not the only one because I have seen all different color combinations of wrapping paper at the stores with polka dots and stripes instead of Christmas trees or Santa.

Jess and I are making a holiday that we like to call, "Hallowmas." Since Christmas has kind of taken over the whole last quarter of the year, we've decided to extend Halloween instead and make it three months long. This is awesome because we can keep the Christmas tree, but have scary decorations if we want and candy. And presents. And scary movies. And Christmas movies like "Elf."

The color scheme we decided on is black, red, blue, and purple. What we did was took a bunch of polymer clay and made our own ornaments. Some of them we kept from last year, though, because they are blue. I tied purple, black, and white ribbons to the Christmas lights.

Here's a scary cone guy I made inspired by this lady http://www.theholidayqueen.blogspot.com/

He's sparkly!

The garland I crocheted with leftover red eyelash yarn and black acrylic yarn.

The topper is a tophat that I crocheted.

Here is our wreath:

Mr. Sprite is playing Santa:

I don't know if we'll do much more. Maybe next year.

I really need to get going on the wedding stuff again. I managed to finish my March Hare with the help of my lovely painting teacher/fiance:

I think he needs a spear or something like it that has a club on it. Then he'd be complete.

Last Sunday, we went with Jess's Aunt Connie and Uncle Boggie (not his real name)

to see "The Santaland Diaries." http://www.bugtheatre.org/calendar/default.aspx It was pretty good, and I recommend it to anyone who likes dark humor.

Now I must go finish crocheting coasters for my co-workers.

All work and no play makes Cori a sad panda

Not much new on the crafting front because I've been working on nothing but the flowers for my wedding. I'm getting close to being done, though. I have about two and a half bouquets left to make and five boutineers (which involves just one flower), so I'm almost done!!! YAY!!!!
Here's what I have done so far:

It's my little crocheted garden.

But I've decided to take a teeny break because of the upcoming holiday, "Hallowmas" (read previous entry for details).

I've managed to make a deal with a few people (who are also hurting for money) that we will not get eachother anything for Christmas (as all you traditional Christmasy people call it) and just enjoy eachother's company, the way it's supposed to be.

As for the rest of my peoples, I have no freakin' clue what to do. Except for one. And I don't think she will read this so it's probably okay to share. But just in case:

***WARNING FOR RACHEL SLISKO***

Do not read this or it will ruin the surprise!

Ok, I think it's safe now.

She likes the show "Firefly" and the movie they made based off of it, "Serenity," and I just happened to find this:

It's a "Serenity Illusion Scarf"!!! Yay!!! Illusion scarves are awesome because if you just look at it straight on, it just looks like stripes, but if you look at it from the side (like on the picture), you can see a hidden picture. I made a similar one for myself with alien heads. Here's where you can find the pattern for the "Serenity Illusion Scarf":

It's nice to be able to knit for a change. I was starting to get crochet-ed out, if that's possible.

As for my sanity, it's starting to wear thin. I think I need to bake something. Maybe this weekend.

I'm having a hard time getting out of this lazy mode that I got into when Jess and I went to Arizona for Thanksgiving. The only thing I could work on out there was the illusion scarf, and I can only work on that for so long. It doesn't help that I'm not feeling really well right now. Oh well. It'll pass.

I was really glad I got to go this year. It's nice to be able to see family that you haven't seen in years. Jess and I have been together almost ten years and the only family on my Mom's side that he's gotten to meet (prior to Thanksgiving) was my Grandma and my Uncle Kent and Aunt Gail.

Here's Kent picking on me:

This time he got to meet two of my cousins, Josh and Shane, and my Uncle Curt. We both got to meet Shane's new wife, Roxanie (sometimes Shane calls her Roxie).

From left: Roxie, Curt, Shane, and Josh.
We had a lot of fun and ate a lot. Curt is hilarious and kept us all entertained. He's missing part of his pinky finger, so he's able to do this and make it look real:

My Dad took Jess and I to the Arboretum. It was beautiful there:

It was fun, but it's always good to come back home.
But it's hard to get out of that lazy mode. There is so much that I need to get done but all I want to do is play videogames and be lazy. Oh well, I get there eventually.
I better get some work done. Have a good day!!

Ten little things that make me happy today

Free Lunch – It’s only fair that I get a sandwich too, after the guys at my work forgot to tell me that they had this big meeting today and I had to scramble to get lunch for them.

People named “Kermit” – Seriously. I got a letter today at work from a man named “Kermit.” That’s awesome.

The thought of going to see my family
– Jess and I are going to Arizona for Thanksgiving and he finally gets to meet some more of my Mom’s side of the family. My Uncle Curt will be there, my cousin Shane and his wife (whom I’ve never met), and possibly even my cousin Josh. Jess hasn’t met any of them yet and I'm excited!

Friends coming back from other states and distant countries – Yay friends! I've missed you!

Vetoing a money-induced Christmas that starts before Halloween is even over – That was ridiculous. It was the day before Halloween and some of the stores I went to were already taking down the Halloween stuff and putting up nothing but Christmas stuff. What the crap?!? So, Thanksgiving doesn’t even count anymore? There are still people who buy Halloween stuff the day before Halloween. I would be dorky enough to do that.
Because of this and the fact that the radio is already playing Christmas music (and because we are extremely broke), I am going to spend as little money as possible on Christmas decorations and paraphernalia and make my own. Plus, I don’t have to have Santas and reindeer and all the other overdone symbols of Christmas and just make spooky decorations so that Halloween is three months long instead. Ha! Take that Christmas!! But my “Hallow-mas” is awesome because you not only get candy, you get presents too!!!
Don’t get me wrong, it’s not that I don’t like Christmas. It’s just that the stupid stores, radio stations, T.V. commercials and everything else that starts with the Christmas sh!t way too early have a tendency to ruin it for me. It’s overkill, and you know the only reason they make such a big deal about Christmas is so that we’ll spend more money. That’s not what Christmas should be about. Oh! I forgot about all the people in my family who are Scrooges and big downers and ruin the whole thing for me too. My family is not that big and the Scrooges outnumber the non-Scrooges. I think it’s probably because we don’t have any little ones in our family. It’s too bad that grownups need children around to get them in the holiday spirit.

Finding friends who share the same interests – The internet is an amazing thing. Without it, I would truly feel like an outcast. Who knew there were so many weirdoes out there just like me who love to create and make things out of paper, thread, paint, yarn, buttons, etc., who love to cook and bake like I do, who love all these obscure bands just like me, who know and love movies that not many people have heard of, and who still are a bit on the childish side. And oddly enough, a lot of them have birthdays in October too. Weird!

My kitty sleeping (and purring) at my side or in my lap– This is the first pet that's been mine and only mine. My other pets belonged to the whole family, not just me (well, technically, Sally belongs to Jesse too, but he's my other half, so it counts). I never knew how comforting it is to have a purring kitty at your side until I had one. It’s meditative, like knitting. She's so sweet and loving and mischievous and bratty, just like me ;)

New projects -Don't get me wrong, I love my current projects. But when it comes to crafting, I have a form of ADD. I am easily distracted, especially when I find a really cool pattern for a scarf or get it in my head that I need to play with sculpy right now! That would be why I have so many unfinished projects. *sigh*

Soup – I love soup. Especially Jesse’s homemade potato soup. It’s never the same every time he makes it. Sometimes it’s potato and leek soup, sometimes he uses sweet potatoes, sometimes he adds celery; but every time it’s scrumptious. With so many varieties, I could eat it for every meal and never get sick of it.

Ghost Hunters - I am addicted to that show now. I blame Brian. It just gives me more reason to believe in ghosts. Like I really needed one ;)

Not too tired to be inspired, but too lazy to do anything about it

There is The Westin Hotel across the street from my building at work. Occasionally, you will see naked people hanging out (literally) in their rooms. You would think that they would realize that there is a very large building across the street with windows, so someone can probably see them in their birthday suit. I guess they don't care.

The mood I am in today is just so wonderfully weird.

I read on a blog somewhere that there is a tag you can get online (as in "tag, your it!") where you grab the book that is closest to you, turn to page 28, and post the third paragraph on your blog. Sounds interesting. Of course, the closest book to me is "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland & Through the Looking Glass" by Lewis Carroll because I am re-reading it for inspiration. Page 28, paragraph 3; here it goes:

"I'm sure I'm not Ada, " she said, "for her hair goes in such long ringlets, and mine doesn't go in ringlets at all; and I'm sure I can't be Mabel, for I know all sorts of things, and she, oh, she knows such a very little! Besides, she's she, and I'm I, and - oh dear, how puzzling it all is! I'll try if I know all the things I used to know. Let me see: four times five is twelve, and four times six is thirteen, and four times seven is - oh dear! I shall never get to twenty at that rate! However, the Multiplication - Table doesn't signify: let's try Geography. London is the capital of Paris, and Paris is the Capital of Rome, and Rome - no, that's all wrong, I'm certain! I must have been changed for Mabel! I'll try and say 'How doth the little - ' " and she crossed her hands on her lap, as if she were saying lessons, and began to repeat it, but her voice sounded hoarse and strange, and the words did not come the same as they used to do: -
Well, that's all of paragraph 3. But I bet you're curious as to what she was about to recite. Would you like to hear the rest? Okay, here you go:

"How doth the little crocodile
Improve his shining tail,
And pour the waters of the Nile

On every golden scale!

"How cheerfully he seems to grin,
How neatly spreads his claws,

And welcomes little fishes in,
With gently smiling jaws!"

I love this book. It's full of nonsense. Yay!!!! Tag!! You're it!

Last night Jess and I went to his haunted house (he had the night off) and went through it with our friend John. He comes out here every October to work at the Asylum. He is leaving tomorrow to go back home to the U.K. so we wanted to hang out with him before he leaves.

We also went to another haunted house called Frightmare (where, incidentally, Jess used to work); I realized how much better the acting at the Asylum is than Frightmare. The guys at the Asylum (including Jess and John) emphasize the importance of the actor's performance and not just rely on props and weapons. Frightmare's setup was awesome, but (some of) the actors just seemed really lethargic. No energy; I didn't even pretend to be scared. No pity scream for you!

Afterwards, we went and saw "Quarantine" at the Promenade. I really shouldn't have stayed up that late, but the movie was awesome. I'm just really mad at the people who made the previews, though, because they showed a vital part in the freaking preview! You're not supposed to show too much. It gives the end of the movie away! Jerks!!

Now I am tired. And my mind is wandering.

Ah, crap! I just spilled water on myself.

When I woke up on Sunday morning, I was greeted by crepe paper streamers and balloons. Jess had stayed up late after working the haunted house to decorate for my birthday! He is irreplaceable. And I'm pretty lucky, even though sometimes I want to shoot him with my point-of-view gun (watch "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy). It was very sweet, but the next day he was very sleep-deprived. Poor thing!

I only have two years till I am 30. I got up out of my chair a second ago to get some water and my hips and both knees popped all at once. I feel old.

Is it 5:00 yet? I really want to go home and take a nap.

I really, really despise the phone. I know that is horrible, considering I am a receptionist. But I don't care. All day long, the phone keeps ringing, usually while I am in the middle of something, and nine times out of ten it is some solicitor or person who hardly speaks any english and I can't understand a word they are saying. I wish I had a device that only allowed "real" calls to come through. It would save me so much trouble.

I have made (as in crocheted) quite a few friends and am anxious to make some more, possibly from my own designs. If they are popular at all, I will have to make quite a lot. I should make some for me as well, because I can't give them all away. I should probably make some scary ones, because Jess has said he doesn't want the wedding to be too girly. Hence, scary stuff. Of course, I have to admit that I don't find my little vampires that scary.

Argh!!! There goes the phone again.

I am so tempted to go in to the empty conference room and take a nap under the table. I wish I could, but I think I would be missed. Especially if the phone keeps ringing and I don't answer it. Meh.

It's 4:00!!! Tea time!!

I really feel like I should be doing something right now. But I don't really have a lot to do. Expect this stack of files to be proofed that Juli told me to take my time with. What's that you say? Don't worry about doing it right now? Go ahead and goof off on your blog? Well, Ok. If you insist. My job is so hard sometimes *giggle giggle* That is until the phone rings for the millionth time.

`Twas brillig, and the slithy toves, Did gyre and gimble in the wabe; All mimsy were the borogoves, And the mome raths outgrabe.' - Lewis Carroll

I have been inspired by a five-year-old's birthday party.

I came across this the other day:http://www.jessicaclaire.net/index.cfm?postID=134

That is the cutest thing I have ever seen! It makes me want to kidnap a small child and throw her a birthday party. But I won't, I promise.

Unfortunately, I don't have a child and all the little ones in my life are of the male persuasion. But I can always combine an "Alice In Wonderland"-esque element with my home made wedding. Why not, I have some Harry Potter elements in there too.

I don't want to go too overboard, though. It can't be too girly because it is Jess's wedding too. I still want to stick with the purple and green theme (or rather lavender and sage), but maybe add a tea party in there with some finger sandwiches and other treats. Jess likes tea. Maybe some cookies that say, "Eat Me."

Hmmm... That sounds bad.

Okay then, the beverages will say "Drink Me." That's better, right?

I've been on the lookout for different shaped tea pots (hopefully in my color scheme) and cheap bone china-looking tea cups online and at thrift stores. As long as I can get a few teacups for decoration, I'll be happy. It would be nice to have a lot of tea cups for an actual tea party but, call me crazy, I have a feeling that most people would rather drink alcohol than tea.

If only I could have a petting zoo! Awwww! That would be awesome to have little rabbits, pigs, and sheep running around. Damn. Maybe for my birthday ;)

In the process of trying to get ideas, I've been reading up on the "Alice" books and also the author, Charles Lutwidge Dodgson a.k.a. Lewis Carroll. It's pretty interesting stuff if you've got some time to kill: http://www.alice-in-wonderland.net/.

Contrary to popular belief, Lewis Carroll was not on drugs when he wrote "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland," he just had an overactive imagination. And I was interested to find out that "Alice" is based off of one of Charles Dodgson's favorite "child friend" as he was fond of calling them. He made up the story as a way to entertain Alice and her sisters.

Anyway, I'm starting to get more and more busy at work. Not as much time to do wedding planning. The receptionist has left and I have taken over for her. There is so much that she should have shown me. It's kind of scary. And she's not very good at explaining things.

I was having a lot of trouble trying to figure out the pattern for the "I Do" shrug and might try this instead:

From the book:

Lace Style
by Pam Allen and Ann Budd

http://www.amazon.com/Lace-Style-Traditional-Innovative-Inspired/dp/1596680288/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1221588413&sr=8-1

I probably won't need long sleeves in June anyway. This is so much easier to knit. And I'm using bamboo yarn which I've never used before. It's so soft! Yay!

I bought some Alice in Wonderland playing cards that have the original illustrations by John Tenniel and some quotes from the book. I'll have to figure out some way to incorporate them in the decorations.

I have made an inspiration board. Some of it are things that I have already done and some things are just what I would like to incorporate. It's an easy way to kind of give people and idea of what you were thinking for your wedding theme. It's pretty random, I know, but I like it.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/26415444@N07/2889780133/

I might go to a yarn store in Arvada on Saturday. There is going to be a crochet designer there named Robyn Chachula who will be teaching a class. I am excited to meet her because she's designed some pretty cool things, like my favorite shrug:

Crochet Me: Designs to Fuel the Crochet Revolution

by Kim Werker

http://www.amazon.com/Crochet-Me-Designs-Fuel-Revolution/dp/159668044X

I have almost finished a pair of leg warmers, so I'll have to take a picture of them when I am finished. I also want to start on a crocheted skirt.

So much I want to do and not enough time to do it. I should just quit my job and become a full time designer. That would be freaking awesome. Too bad it could never work out. Oh well. Back to knitting and crocheting on my lunch hour and after work.

Tonight I think I'll paint me some tea pots. And take pictures, because I really need to get my save the dates (std - hee hee) done.

You've got red on you

The summer has it in for me.

I've never liked summer except when I was in school (summer break! Woo Hoo!) but I usually hid in my air conditioned abode, working on one craft or another and watching movies and MTV, you know, when they actually played videos. Wow, imagine that.

I can't stand the heat, so I got out of the kitchen.

I don't know how anyone can enjoy 90 - 100 degree weather, unless the heat has made them so delirious that they think they are standing in a vat filled with vanilla pudding.

But that's just me. In 90 degree weather, I (used to) get hives from sunburns, excruciating headaches, have an enormous lack of energy, and am just plain sweaty. But now summer has decided to add another component to the equation: now the heat is dehydrating me to the point where I am getting bladder infections from it. What The Hell? That's just not fair! I recently acquired a bladder infection and when I went to the doctor, she informed me that it was a year, almost to the day, since I had my last bladder infection. Strange.

She concluded that since it happens in the summer and since I admitted that I haven't really been drinking as much water as I should, I am probably dehydrated and that has caused my infection. Well, crap. Now I hate summer even more. Especially since I don't get summer vacations anymore.

Needless to say, I haven't really been getting much crafting done. I was hoping to work on a bunch of flowers on Tuesday because I took the day off of work but ended up just sleeping the whole time. How dare my body catch up on sleep! I guess I needed it since I was up all night being uncomfortable.

I've been drinking gallons of water and I have to pee every 10 minutes. Now my pills are making me nauseous. Great.

Oh well, what can I do?

Make pygmy puffs, that's what!!

I ordered some more eyes for my pygmy puffs and decided to get some noses too. That way they will look even more adorable. I ordered them from this fine lady:

She also has another shop:

I know, I know. I get way too excited over little things. But I don't care, they're adorable.
This is a pattern you can buy off of her website:
I also decided to go with this instead of the flower shawl thingy:

Purty. Now if only I could figure out the damn pattern.

And now for something completely different...
Here's a video for your enjoyment:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IEUwYtabecQ
I love this movie. I wonder if I could make a "Shaun of the Dead" doll. Hmm...

Mmm...braaaaiiiiiiiiiiiiins...I mean...scarves!

I've been living in a daze for a couple of months now. I feel like a zombie. It's partly due to lack of sleep. My kitties enjoy wrestling with each other when Jess and I are trying to sleep at night.
I think another reason is stress. I have less than a year to prepare for this wedding and I have so much still to do. I have decided to stuff the flowers with fiberfill to give them more of a shape and it is taking awhile to get it down the stems evenly. That's going to make the flower-making process take even longer. But I did this to myself so I can't complain.
I would really like to start on my Etsy shop if I had the time. I have a couple of scarves made already but probably need to make a few more things before I can start selling.
This is a scarf that I designed myself:

And here's the garden scarf I made from Debbie Stoller's "Stitch 'N Bitch Crochet: The Happy Hooker" book (http://www.amazon.com/Stitch-Bitch-Crochet-Happy-Hooker/dp/0761139850) :
Now I just need to design a banner for my store and get matching business and thank you cards made.
I found the best website EVER: www.ravelry.com. It is perfect for people like me who crochet and/or knit. I even met a woman from Arvada and she invited me to one of their knitting circle groups. They meet at a yarn shop in Arvada that for some reason I never knew existed.
Ravelry has all sorts of groups that you can join; everything from Harry Potter fan club to a horror group to a Tom Waits fan club to a crafty brewer club. Very fun.
I must say, my work days this week have just flown by because I spend most of my time browsing these groups. Um...I mean working. Yeah. I'm not goofing off at work, never!
Anyway, nothing else exciting going on right now. Except that I keep finding really cool patterns on ravelry that I want to make (and some spiffy Christmas/Birthday presents) but I can't justify working on anything else until I can get a large number of flowers, pygmy puffs, and creepy cute crochet creatures done. And then there's that shawl thingy I want to make.
Sorry this is a bit boring. Maybe when I'm more awake, I can come up with something a little more clever to say.
Until then, I'm going to be a flower making machine.
Goodnight

You don't need to tell me, I know I'm crazy

It only took eight years, but Jess and I are finally engaged (if you want to know the details, you can find it at my wedding website. The link is located in the "Stuff I Like" sidebar). Yippee!!
As happy as I am to be marrying this wonderful person, the actual process of wedding planning is downright scary and confusing. We are definitely not going to have a traditional wedding which makes it a bit easier, but it's still overwhelming.

Luckily, I have some pretty darn creative friends who are helping me with this process.
Since I am an avid knitter and crocheter, my friend Kellie (who's a florist) gave me the wonderful idea of crocheting my own flowers. What a great idea! That is definitely my style! And the best part is, they won't die! They may fall apart, but we can keep them for a long time.

Here's a picture:

I am also going to add some orchids to my bouquet:
Our theme was formed: A homemade wedding. Jess likes to make his own alcohol (beer, wine, mead) and I like to do every craft under the sun. And I like purple and green (well, more like lavender and sage). So I would crochet our bouquets.
Of course, I have to take into consideration that Jesse's family is huge; he wants five people to be at his side (our henchmen and women). Therefore, I picked five people to be on my side. I have to crochet flowers for six bouquets. That shouldn't be too hard, right?

Well, then I got the crazy idea that the flowers could also be the centerpieces at the tables. This idea was quickly dismissed because in order to get them to stand up straight in the "vases" I would have to put some kind of floral wire in them. Plus, I have an even better idea for the centerpieces (hand made of course).

In the end, I decided that I could make a bunch of little flowers for party favors. Anyone who wants to take one home is more than welcome. For the men who may not want crocheted flowers, we will have special cups made.

Okay, so I will have to get busy making all those flowers. I think I've made enough for my bouquet. I will just have to keep chugging alone so that my crocheted garden can grow. Not a problem. And I've recruited my Mom to help me since she's the one who taught me how to crochet in the first place.

But since the theme is homemade, I am constantly getting ideas for decorations or accessories or food.

I was at Barnes and Noble the other day and spotted this cute little book that I just had to have:

Even when I showed it to Jess, he said, "Oh, you had to have this! It's awesome!" Anyone who knows us knows that we are big zombie movie fans. And we like anything with other scary things and ninjas. There is even a little skeleton bride and groom pattern in this book! How perfect! If only we were having a wedding cake! They could be the toppers. But I figured that we could keep them on the dessert table.

Now I am inspired to make a bunch of every pattern in this book and have them on the tables. People can take them home or just enjoy their company at the wedding. And I'm thinking of sneaking some pygmy puffs in there as well :) (I'm going to put as many Harry Potter themes in this wedding that I can get away with).

Then I found this shawl in an Interweave Crochet magazine:

So cute! I will have to make it purple and green, though.
I'm doing an awful lot of crocheting. I should add some knitting in there too.
But I have a million other ideas in my overworked little head. I just hope I have the patient and energy to finish it all. I have less than a year, but I think I can do it. And yes, I know I'm insane for trying to do all of this, but I think it'll be worth it.
